1922 The Dream

In the late summer of 1922, John M. Chalfant (recognized by many to be the area's best golfer) met with a couple of friends to discuss the possibility of forming and building a golf course in the Kennett Square area. On Thursday, September 21st, 1922, a public notice was sent inviting the town to gather for a meeting at the Kennett Fireman's Auditorium to discuss the possibility of establishing a golf club. A special letter of invitation was sent to Mr. Pierre S. du Pont, vice president of E.I. DuPont Neomurs Company, a local philanthropist. DuPont responded, noting he believed the addition of the course and country club were desirable for the community providing the cost was not prohibitive. With enthusiasm from meeting attendees, consensus was reached and 20,000 was raised in a matter of minutes.

1923 The Launch

As the force behind all the preliminaries and in recognition of the work he had done organizing and appointing committees, raising funds and acquiring the land, John Chalfant was elected the club's first president. In Spring of 1923, the work of building the course began in earnest. Donald Ross was selected to design the course and construction for the first nine holes was underway. During course construction, the building committee was busy supervising the design of the Clubhouse. On October 18, 1923, hundreds of guests attended the first official event at the Club.

2000's Future Ahead

In the years to come, Kennett Square would build a large swimming pool, seven tennis courts, and four platform tennis courts. The Clubhouse would be expanded and renovated, and the golf course toughened to the point where today, despite measuring only 6,113 yards from the regular tees (6,416 from the back), and with a par of 71, it has a Slope of 134.

Through the efforts of the members and staff, the Club has had the honor of hosting the 2001 US Open Men's Qualifier, 2002 US Open Women's Qualifier and the 2003 US Open Boys' Qualifier.
